LSC men out to pursue second-straight NAC title

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown” ¬ (Shakespeare's Henry IV - Part II).

If there is any truth to that what Shakespeare had to say in 1597, the Lyndon State College men’s cross country team is aware of it as it prepares to defend its North Atlantic Conference title from a year ago.

Led by the return of four All-NAC runners, including 2008 Male Runner and Rookie of the Year Craig Johnson, the Hornets appear to be poised for another run at the crown. However, Head Coach Chris Ummer has made it a point to keep that goal, and his athletes focus, in a proper perspective.

“I told the men early last spring that we will need to be better this year to defend the title,” he said. “We’re a marked team now and others are looking at us and saying ‘we have to be better than them.’ If they are going to be better than we were last year, we’ll need to be much better that we were in 2008 to stay ahead.”

In addition to Johnson, a sophomore, Lyndon also returns fellow soph Michael Farmer and senior Jeremiah Powell - two All-NAC first-teamers - as well as second-team selection Wildens Fils, also a sophomore. The foursome will be asked to once again lead a team of young, talented runners as they did a year ago.

“We’re fortunate to return our top four runners. They are all good leaders and hard workers,” said Ummer. “Jeremiah is our senior leader and he has come into the season in very good condition. Wilden and Michael are much better than they were a year ago and Craig, despite being a little behind due to an ankle injury, is coming along.

“Beyond that we have a few returning runners and a couple nice freshmen to fill in the gaps,” he continued. “Returnees like Mike Muccilli will make certainly a difference. He’s coming into the season as fresh as he’s ever been.”

In cross country, wins and losses throughout the regular season do not matter much as most programs use its invitational meets to prepare for its respective conference championship meets. This too is Ummer’s philosophy, and all he is concerned about is whether or not his runners are at their peak heading into the NAC Championships on Oct. 31 at Green Mountain College.

“We simply need to be better,” he said. “We need to train harder, go the extra mile, so to speak, and put ourselves in a position to defend the title. We’re not a fast starting team. We don’t go hard right away. We pick our races to measure ourselves and that should put us in a position to peak on Oct. 31.”

In the women’s program, the lineup will feature several new faces. Gone are the likes of Lyndsay Calkins, last season’s NAC Female Runner of the Year, and Allynne O’Hearn, who earned second-team honors as a freshman. In their place is a group of hungry freshman and veterans Holly Reed, a sophomore, and junior Sarah Leclerc, who missed most of the 2008 campaign with a leg injury.

“Holly and Sarah will definitely be the leaders of the team,” said Ummer. “Sarah’s health has now improved and Holly has bettered herself greatly since last season. When you add in three of our freshmen – Jess Walker, Jen Young and Cassie Tricou – they form a good nucleus. Leah Morgan, another freshman, is slightly behind that pack of runners, but she is beginning to catch up. It’s hard to say what they will do, but along with our veteran runners, I think they’ll make us a better team as the season progresses.”

The Lady Hornets finished a respectable third at the 2008 NAC Championships and despite their youth, as well as the losses of Calkins and O’Hearn, Ummer feels his female runners possess the ability to maintain their standing in the conference.

“Our goal is not necessarily to win the NAC, but to be honest I think we could be at least third again,” he said. “I think we have a realistic chance of doing that. The girls have been extremely motivated and have a very tight dynamic. They are eager to improve, open-minded and hungry to be better runners and a better team.”
