Veterans to lead the way for LSC

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – After a posting a 4-6 record a year ago, the Lyndon State College women’s tennis program is optimistic that the upcoming 2008 season will become a promising one. Led by the return of six veteran players, the Lady Hornets are looking to lay the foundation for a perennialwtns 009.JPG contender in the North Atlantic Conference.

“I think we will be very strong in the first through fourth positions, said LSC head Coach Mary Lou Bell, who enters her 10th year at the helm. “At the fifth and sixth positions we are still improving. We’re learning new skills there, but that aside, I feel we can be a better team this season if we can remain injury-free at the top of the lineup.”

With less than a week of practice under its belt, Lyndon will lean heavily on its more experienced players heading into its season-opening. The junior tandem of Ashley Dewhurst (North Conway, NH) and Sue Promphong (St. Johnsbury, VT) will join sophomore Jenn Falsetti (Albany, NY) to form the nucleus of the team and the Lady Hornets will look for significant contributions from junior newcomer Jill Newell (Bethlehem, NH) and freshman Morgan Bailas (Easton, CT).

“Our less experienced players need to learn the game at this level. They need instruction and we’re providing that,” said Bell. “We haven’t had many days together as a team and so we have yet to decide who will play where. It’s simply too early to decide.

“However, if we can keep recruiting and add more depth to the program, it will certainly help our chances,” she added. “I feel good about this team. I think they can come back and have a good season. If we put people in the correct positions I think we can be competitive in all of our matches.”
