Loan Periods and Fines

Loan periods for library materials are listed in the above table. Items may be renewed only once. Renewals can be done in person, by telephone, or through the library website. A fine of ten cents per day the library is open is charged for each overdue book or music CD. For videorecordings and CD-ROMs the fine is $1.00 per day. A substantial fine of up to $1.00 per hour is charged for overdue reserve material.

When an item is three days overdue the library sends a notice requesting its return. A second notice is sent at the end of the second week. If materials are not returned four weeks after the date due, the borrower is billed the cost of the item plus a $10.00 processing fee for each item.

Lost or Damaged Items

Patrons who lose or damage an item sufficiently to require replacement will be requested to pay the price of the item plus a $10.00 processing charge. Repairable damages will be assessed by the librarian and charged accordingly.

Outstanding Books and Fines

A student with library fines or materials outstanding cannot graduate or receive any official record of coursework. A community borrower cannot check out library materials until his or her record is clear.

Reserve Materials

Those books, tapes, articles, etc. whose circulation is limited because they are needed for class work may be borrowed at the Circulation Desk. The loan period is determined by the instructor of the class. Only one reserve item at a time may be borrowed. There is a reserve notebook at the Circulation Desk which lists all materials currently on reserve under each instructor's name. Check this book if you are unsure which reserve item you need.

Reserve material may be borrowed overnight 1/2 hour before the library closes. A second item may be borrowed at that time if no one else requests it. They are due back the next day, within the first hour after the library opens. A substantial fine of up to $1.00 per hour is charged for overdue reserve material.

Before the library closes for a holiday, reserve books may be checked out two hours before closing time and are due back within one hour on the day the library re-opens.

In the online catalog, reserve items are indicated by the location "Reserve Desk".

For more complete information of reserves go to: Reserve Room Policies.

Reciprocal Borrowing - Vermont Consortium of Academic Libraries

Policies

  • Qualified Borrowers: All faculty at Vermont Consortium of Academic Libraries (VCAL) member institutions are eligible to receive borrowing privileges at the Lyndon State College Library.
  • Verification of Affiliation: All candidates for reciprocal borrowing privileges must present a valid institutional ID and documentation from their institution attesting to their faculty status at the time of requesting privileges.
  • Materials Subject to Reciprocal Borrowing: Reciprocal borrowing is limited to a maximum of 10 books from the general circulating collections of the LSC Library. No other materials are covered under this agreement.
  • Loan Period: Participants may borrow an item for the loan periods listed above.
  • Renewals: Borrowers may renew an item if it has not been requested by another person.
  • Recalls: All materials borrowed are subject to recall by the LSC Library when requested by a member of the LSC community.
  • Overdue Items: Overdue notices will be sent by paper notice. Fines will follow the amounts listed above.
  • Lost Items: Items not returned and declared lost will be billed at the same rate as the "Lost or Damaged Items" policy stated above. The home library of the delinquent borrower shall be ultimately held responsible for the payment of lost item fees.
Security System

The library uses an alarm system which sounds when an item that does not circulate leaves the building or has not been properly checked out. This system enables patrons to move through the doors freely without the inconvenience of having books and packs inspected each time they leave.

If the alarm sounds as you leave the library, please don't panic. The person at the Circulation Desk will help you find out why the alarm has sounded. It could be that something wasn't properly desensitized when it was checked out, or that some other item you are carrying caused the alarm to ring. Frequently textbooks from the bookstore will cause the alarm to ring. Your cooperation will help us to keep the books you need in the library.
